This month I’m sharing 5 OT passages that show us God’s heart for His mission and inspire us towards deeper obedience as participants in God’s mission.
Missional Mandate OT Passage #1 – Genesis 12:2-3, “I will make you a blessing to others….All the families of the earth will be blessed through you.”
God blesses us so we can bless the world!
Missional Mandate OT Passage#2 — Psalm 87:4-6, ‘I will count Egypt and Babylon among those who know me — also Philistia and Tyre, and distant Ethiopia. They have all become citizens of Jerusalem!
‘Regarding Jerusalem it will be said, “Everyone enjoys the rights of citizenship there.”
‘And the Most High will personally bless this city. When the Lord registers the nations, he will say, “They have all become citizens of Jerusalem.”’
God wants every nation – even those considered enemies – to know Him personally and to be welcomed into His home and family!
Missional Mandate OT Passage#3 — 2 Chronicles 6:32-33, which is part of King Solomon’s prayer to dedicate God’s temple. It says:
“In the future, foreigners who do not belong to your people Israel will hear of you. They will come from distant lands when they hear of your great name and your strong hand and your powerful arm. And when they pray toward this Temple, then hear from heaven where you live, and grant what they ask of you. In this way, all the people of the earth will come to know and fear you, just as your own people Israel do. They, too, will know that this Temple I have built honors your name.” (NLT)
God wants all the people of the earth to come to know Him and worship Him and pray to Him! The early kings of Israel understood this and prayed for it. How much more should we as Christians – the new Israel – join this prayer! May all the nations of the world hear about our great God!
Missional Mandate OT Passage #4 — Isaiah 12:4-5, which says,
“Thank the Lord! Praise his name!
Tell the nations what he has done.
Let them know how mighty he is!
Sing to the Lord, for he has done wonderful things.
Make known his praise around the world.”
As God’s people, we go and send others to proclaim God’s praise throughout the world so that all the nations can drink from the well of God’s salvation to us in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Missional Mandate Passage #5 — Zechariah 2:10-11, ‘The Lord says, “Shout and rejoice, O beautiful Jerusalem, for I am coming to live among you. Many nations will join themselves to the Lord on that day, and they, too, will be my people. I will live among you, and you will know that the Lord of Heaven’s Armies sent me to you.”‘
This passage from Zechariah reminds us that God calls everyone to join themselves to the Lord and become His people. What a blessing that we are known as God’s children through our union with Christ! What a reason to make God’s invitation known throughout the world!
