Is your heart breaking over recent news?

You are not alone. Some weeks the news bears tragedy after tragedy that breaks our hearts. This past week or two have been like that for us.

We are especially grieving for our brothers and sisters in Sentani, where we used to live and work in Indonesia, who are being devastated by landslides and floods. We’d love your prayers as we seek ways to help the victims. We’ve heard now that hundreds are dead, seriously injured or missing, and thousands are homeless or displaced. Please pray for relief from the continuing rains, for strength for rescue crews and those cleaning up the aftermath, for comfort for those who’ve lost so much, and for Christians to shine the love and compassion that comes from God.

The Lord’s presence has been a deep comfort to us. And God often comforts us through his Word, too. He’s been so good as to bring to mind Psalm 46, which we are sharing with you today.

In light of all of these tragedies that have come to the surface this week, we pray that God’s presence will be known as a refuge, and that we will see Him exalted – especially in the compassion and love of His people as we respond.

We pray that he will comfort you, too, through Psalm 46, and bless you as you pray and respond.

Psalm 46 (NIV)

God is our refuge and strength,
an ever-present help in trouble.
Therefore we will not fear,
though the earth give way
and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea,
though its waters roar and foam
and the mountains quake with their surging.

There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God,
the holy place where the Most High dwells.
God is within her, she will not fall;
God will help her at break of day.
Nations are in uproar, kingdoms fall;
he lifts his voice, the earth melts.

The Lord Almighty is with us;
the God of Jacob is our fortress.

Come and see what the Lord has done,
the desolations he has brought on the earth.
He makes wars cease
to the ends of the earth.
He breaks the bow and shatters the spear;
he burns the shields with fire.
He says, “Be still, and know that I am God;
I will be exalted among the nations,
I will be exalted in the earth.”

The Lord Almighty is with us;
the God of Jacob is our fortress.
