John 1 Prayer – The Light Shines in the Darkness

Here is a prayer exercise I prayed at church today after a sermon on John 1.

As we pray, I invite you to imagine an image of light that is meaningful to you. For some, it may be a candle burning, for others it may be the sun sparkling on the water, a torch, a lighthouse, the stars, fairy lights, or a bright sunny day. Choose an image of light to focus on.

I invite you now to hold that image of light in mind as you concentrate on your breath. Imagine the light filling you and warming you as you breathe in, and breath out, breathe in and breathe out.

As we breathe in, I invite you to pray, “The light shines in the darkness”

As we breathe out, “And the darkness has not overcome it”

Breathing in, “The light shines in the darkness”

Breathing out, “And the darkness has not overcome it”.

(repeat)

I invite you to continue focusing on the light and praying on your breath as we continue in prayer.

Lord God, Almighty Creator,

You spoke your Word and the world came into being.

Into the darkness, you said, ‘Let there be light’,

And there was light.

And you saw that the light was good.

Giver of Light and Life,

We worship you.

We thank you for your life-giving Word,

And for revealing yourself fully to us

through Jesus Christ our Lord,

by the illumination of your Holy Spirit.

Fill us with your light

That we may shine your goodness in our lives.

In the silence, I invite you to pour out your thanks to God.

(Silence)

Breathing in, “The light shines in the darkness”

Breathing out, “And the darkness has not overcome it”.

Holy and Merciful God,

We bring to you the shadows that lurk within us,

The sin that so easily weighs us down,

The burdens we have tried to carry by ourselves,

And our weaknesses and failings that discourage us.

You, who call us out of darkness

Into your wonderful light,

Search us, know us, and cleanse us,

Help us to walk in the light of your loving presence

And guide us with the lamp of your Word.

In the silence, I invite you to bring to the Lord your cares and sorrows,

Trusting that the Lord is your light and your salvation

And the God who cares for you.

(Silence)

Breathing in, “The light shines in the darkness”

Breathing out, “And the darkness has not overcome it”.

God of Justice and Hope,

We bring to you the darkness

that threatens our community and our world.

Those relationships that are broken

People groups in war and conflict

A world in rebellion against you

Where suffering, illness, disaster and tragedy

threaten lives every second of every day,

And selfishness and greed ruin your creation.

We lift to you our community and world leaders,

And ask that your wisdom will shine on them.

We lift to you those whose lives are under threat

And ask that they will seek and find your light

We lift to you those living in conflict

And ask you to shine your peace

For you turn the darkness of night

Into a new dawn of a new day.

I invite you in the silence to bring to the Lord

Those you know who are suffering or in need,

and any world events that are on your heart today,

Believing that the Lord, who has made his face to shine on us,

Is willing to shine his light on those walking in darkness.

 (Silence)

Breathing in, “The light shines in the darkness”

Breathing out, “And the darkness has not overcome it”.

Light of the World,

We bring to you those who do not yet know you

In our families, among our friends, in our community, and in our world

We grieve that they do not know you

That they have not yet recognised your light

And perhaps have never heard your message of light and life.

Please send the light of your Word

And the hope of salvation through Jesus Christ

To every dark corner of the earth.

Empower us by your Spirit to be witnesses who tell others about the Light

Until all nations come to your light

And your glory fills the earth.

In the silence, I invite you to bring to the Lord those who do not yet know him, and all who are ministering in the name of Christ so that others may believe.

(Silence)

Breathing in, “The light shines in the darkness”

Breathing out, “And the darkness has not overcome it”.

Lord, you are our everlasting light

And we praise you for sharing your light with us

You have made your light shine in our hearts

To give us the light of the knowledge of your glory

Displayed in the face of Jesus Christ

By your glorious Spirit

May your glory shine on us

And the fullness of your grace and truth

Warm our hearts and radiate your love.

Breathing in, “The light shines in the darkness”

Breathing out, “And the darkness has not overcome it”.

Now I invite you to imagine the warmth and power of the Light of Christ shining in you. Picture the light of Christ shining from your heart and now flooding your entire body with warmth. Allow your body to relax into the warmth and light that God shines in you by His grace.

Feel the light of Christ warming your heart and extending into your lungs with each breath. Picture the light of Christ shining from your heart into your spine, and then the light flowing up your spine into your brain and renewing your mind. Picture the light of Christ shining from your eyes, warming your nasal cavities and ears, allowing you to sense God’s glory and truth anew. Picture the light of Christ filling your mouth and throat and neck, freeing you to smile and preparing you to sing for joy and to speak words of hope and encouragement.

Picture the light of Christ flowing through your veins and into your shoulders and arms, hands and fingers, being strengthened for good works. Picture the light of Christ shining in your organs, nourishing you to do God’s will. Picture the light of Christ now flowing down your torso, hips, legs, feet, and toes – freeing you to walk in the ways of the Lord and trust Him to determine Your steps. Feel the light of Christ soaking into your bones, deep into your marrow, into your cells, into the fabric of your entire being. Feel yourself saturated with the light of Christ as Jesus makes His home in you and fills you with His treasures and gifts.

Through Jesus, by the Holy Spirit, you are God’s precious child of light. God generously pours His Spirit into You and blesses You with His presence and with the light of Christ. Feel the light of Christ growing stronger with each breath.

Breathing in, “The light shines in the darkness”

Breathing out, “And the darkness has not overcome it”.

As you continue to pray on each breath, imagine the Light of Christ now shining from you, freeing you to bring others into the light of Christ and strengthening you for whatever will be. Prepare to take the light of Christ with you and let it shine. And now feel the smile of God upon you as open your eyes and as we pray together The Lord’s Prayer.
